Dental diseases (cavities and gum disease) are the most common diseases affecting people besides the common cold. 75% of the population has some form of periodontal disease, but a majority do not realize it.

Tooth brushing cleans the smooth surfaces of the teeth and is an excellent way to prevent cavities. However, gum disease starts in between the teeth. Regular toothbrushes can’t reach these critical areas and most people don’t or can’t floss effectively.

Gingivitis is a bacterial infection of the gums that’s reversible. However, periodontal disease IS gum and bone disease. The infection spreads from the gum into the bone and permanent damage occurs. If detected early it can be controlled.

Unlike most diseases that give us early warning signs, gum disease progresses silently, often without pain. It may develop slowly or progress quite rapidly. More than half of all people over 18 have at least the early stages of periodontal disease. Even more frightening, after the age of 35, three out of four people are affected to some degree. Periodontal disease is an infection that destroys the gum surrounding your teeth and also destroys the supporting bone that holds your teeth in place.

Few people know Periodontal Disease is a contagious disease and can be passed through the saliva. Your chances of developing Periodontal Disease dramatically increase if:

  • You Smoke
  • Have Diabetes
  • Have Osteoporosis
  • On Certain Medications
  • Have Family History

Periodontal Disease may increase your risk for a variety of health concerns including:

  • Diabetes
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Stroke
  • Lung Infections
  • Preterm, low birth weight infants
  • Respiratory diseases
  • Pancreatic Cancer (in Men)
